Tutorial for brushed metal

Hi,

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to create a brushed metal effect on some text? I want to create something similar to the knoppix logo which comes as wallpaper with teh current knoppix 3.4.

Besides I would also be very pleased if someone can give me a hint on a good Gimp book which covers the current version. (F. e. something like "Photoshop Wow!")

Hmm..I had seem no tutorial...
But, I'd go for something like:

add noise, horizontal scale/motion blur
lightning effects with bump map.
