Umm, that doesn't work real well if you need to move the selection by a reasonably large number of pixels, say 100 for example...

Hold Shift and press the cursor key four times then. You can also just use the mouse and keep an eye on the statusbar.

PS: Please note that I am not arguing that all this is perfect and can't be improved. I am only pointing out ways to achieve the desired result.

Shift + cursor gives moves of 25-30 pixels at a time, but I don't know where that is set.
