Where does 2.0 find its fonts?

I only got to play with rc1 for less than a day and along comes 2.0.0 the real thing. I did useful work already with 2.0.0rc1 But I had trouble configuring extra fonts. The usual drill is to install e.g., freefont according to the directions in the file, including a couple of fp runs. This pus the freefont collection out where xfontsel can see them but Gimp doesn't see them at all.

The real 2.0.0 is compiling as I write. So what is the scoop on installing additional fonts in Gimp like the freefont and sharefont collections?

I've got over 1000 Windows TrueType fonts configured in XFree86 4.4.0 on Linux that Gimp 2.0 can access just fine.

I followed the process of installing fonts in X, documented here:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/fonts2.html#9

First, I followed the steps in section 2.2.2 and then I ran "fc-cache", as mentioned in sextion 2.1.1:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/fonts2.html#4

I forget if I needed to restart X or not but all of my fonts are accessible using the new text tool just fine. The Windows TTFs I have installed I downloaded from http://www.1001freefonts.com/

I don't know if you're looking for TTF support like I'm using or support for other fonts. If you're running XFree86 4.3.0 or later, the above info should be all you need (read through all the font docs) to make the fonts accessible to Gimp.

Good luck... :)

Peace...

Sorry, but all these links you posted about how to install fonts on X11 are just misleading. GIMP 2.0 doesn't use the X server or any X font server to access fonts.

There's a page explaining how GIMP 2.0 handles fonts at gimp.org:

http://www.gimp.org/unix/fonts.html

This reference is what I needed. But it raises two more questions:
1. The freefont collection and sharefont collection used with previous versions of Gimp have only pfb files and not afm files. Does this mean that they cannot be used with the Pango/Fontconf/Gimp combo?

2. For better viewing the above combination appears to alias certain type 1 fonts to Truetype. However for printing I prefer the real Type 1 fonts. Should I disable these aliases?

Thanks for clarifying that. Apparently, XFree86 4.3.0 and later use Fontconfig for font support so the link I posted describing issuing the "fc-cache" really is applicable in this case. :)

i also prefer Type1 fonts. i do not attach this preference according to my font knowledge, just from what i can see of the history of the development of the fonts. if history does keep repeating itself, then Type1 fonts should be the good ones.

TrueType fonts, the way i understand it, were designed solely so that windows could own your computer and not Adobe. which is one thing. being able to work for html and pdf or ps is another thing.

i have tried to put what i know about installing Type1 fonts on my web site, which thankfully -- no one else can tell me what to put there or how to put it.

http://carol.gimp.org/gimp/fonts/type1.html

Manish and i have been working on a python script that should (with a little work) display all of the fonts located in one directory on a computer.

i am a little nervous about showing you this Type1 information as i had so little problem (eventually) with Debian and fonts.

if you have any questions or improvements to the instructions or see any gaping holes in the information, please let me know.

i am right now editing my css to include all of the fonts in the freefont collection. some very interesting fonts are included there and researching them has been a lesson in modern computer development and also in mid-1800 art.

i can send to this list when the css is finished -- yosh's script worked really well, i am somewhat anxious to share this also.

sorry that the official gimp web sites dont contain information useful like this for this new gimp. my sorry for this has no end.

okay, i reread the pages i showed you and the information there is incorrect.
http://carol.gimp.org/gimp/fonts/type1.html

i made these files when i was installing the fonts, but the process i used did not get the fonts to work.

i think the problem is that it is too simple. once the fonts are working, whatever reads the fonts just needs to know where they are.

it seems as if you can even get the fonts loaded on the fly.

until me or someone else can sort through the information and find the correct information -- http://freetype.gimp.org has a plug-in that "should" work for the new gimp.

sorry for the misinformation.
