Photoshop has the nice feature of showing you an outline of the currently selected brush and allowing you to quickly change its size by pressing the [ and ] keys.

I was wondering if GIMP has anything similar. I'm using version 1.2.3.

GIMP-1.3 has a preview of the brush outline, not the shortcuts to change size though. Perhaps you should try the development series; GIMP has evolved quite a bit since GIMP-1.2 and the latest 1.3 releases are quite stable.
