Why not allow the name to be configurable?

This discussion is connected to the gimp-developer-list.gnome.org mailing list which is provided by the GIMP developers and not related to gimpusers.com.

This is a read-only list on gimpusers.com so this discussion thread is read-only, too.

Why not allow the name to be configurable?

Would it be too much of a compromise to just drop the P at the end? GNU Image Manipulator
instead of
GNU Image Manipulation Program
?

Of course I would suggest planning and waiting until a major version change to change it.

IMO it is too much of a compromise to even consider a name change. Discussions like these server only one purpose - artificial creation of a previously non-existant problem to support the position of the one who started the discussion.

I shouldn't have suggested compromise of the name. It would be better to have "Deluxe Edition" as an optional prefix. DE-GIMP appropriately means to cure from lameness. We could continue to use the GIMP name and not lose any name-recognition in the process. Searches for GIMP would continue to turn up the correct pages, etc. Also degimp.org seems to be available in case we want it.
