Gimp 2.8 download

Please could someone out there give me some advice. Despite downloading gimp 2 from various websites, I have the same problem in that the program won't recognise any common file extension for photos. The only extension it recognises is the native XCF. I| have used earlier versions of gimp without this problem.

It's as though there are no plug-ins with the downloaded program. I'm not only experienced user, so I feel out my depths. Please would you tell me where I can go to get some advice. My OS is Windows 7 on a 64-bit machine.

Thank you

Steve

Gimp 2.8 download

Hi Steve,

The official download location is on the website: https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
The latest version will be 2.8.20.

Can you try with that version, and then we can start troubleshooting what it might be?
Also - you may have better luck asking this on the GIMP-user list (this list is about the website).

Gimp 2.8 download

Hi Pat,

Thank you for your kind offer to help me in this matter. I did as you suggested with a clean reinstall from the website of the latest version. Unfortunately, I still get the same problem. You will see by the screenshots attached to this message, I have a list of PNG files which I want to open which gimp doesn't recognise. You will also in the second screen shot that only XCF files are recognised.

If this is not your territory, I'll take your suggestion and post this problem on the gimp users website. Please do you have the address of the most appropriate website to use.

Thanks

Steve

The most likely issue: GIMP is not searching for plug-ins where there are any, or vice versa.

The search locations are specified in the folders sections of the GIMP preferences - see

https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-pimping.html#idp15766256 and
https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-pimping.html#gimp-prefs-folders-data

with an example for brushes.

You should change those to the location where you have installed your current GIMP.

Michael
