gimp-gap git clone build issue

gimp-gap git clone build issue
I built gimp and gimp-gap both from source with fresh git clones and updates at a prefix, and gimp appears to be working fine, but I'm not having any luck getting gimp-gap to run. The error I get is:
Could not execute plug-in "gap_movepath" ($prefix/gimp-git/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/gap_movepath) because it uses an obsolete version of the plug-in protocol.
From this thread (https://discuss.pixls.us/t/problem-with-gmic-plug-in-for-gimp-2-9/411/4) I checked my gimptools:
~/gimp-git/gimp$ gimptool-2.0 --version 2.9.3
So, in theory, it would have found the right version, but I still get the error.
