if mentioning "Microsoft Windows", then is it correct to only mention "OS X" ?

This discussion is connected to the gimp-developer-list.gnome.org mailing list which is provided by the GIMP developers and not related to gimpusers.com.

This is a read-only list on gimpusers.com so this discussion thread is read-only, too.

This is a string from main po file:

[...] GIMP is available for Linux, Microsoft Windows and OS X.

Shouldn't be "[...] for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X." ?

No, "[...] for Linux, Windows and OS X."

It should most likely be GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X.

The main reason to write Microsoft Windows is to remove the ambiguity with the term for the UI concept of windows.

GNU/Linux is the preferred way to refer to this platform, as this highlights the importance of the GNU tools besides the kernel (Linux).

For OS X... not sure how to refer to this one most correctly, I've seen Mac OS X, OS X and OSX, ...

As I'm someone who favours the Oxford comma, I would add a comma after "Windows" so it would read -> "[...] for Linux, Windows, and OS X."

Cheers!

Kevin.
