If we could clarify what is happening and if the GNOME foundation can indeed help, this would be good.

Looking at the sidebar on the Summary page there is this notice:

Hey, this isn't a SourceForge project! Check out the SourceForge Open Source Mirror Directory for more information.

It also appears that the account the project page belongs to is "sf-editor1", and a lot of well known projects are listed on the user page: http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor1/ I'm also noticing VLC on that list, which abandoned SF as well if memory serves me right.

The box in the sidebar links to http://sourceforge.net/mirror/ and explains that they are mirroring popular open-source projects which are not already on SF or no longer maintained. The last section claims they want to hear if "you don't want your project mirrored on our site" and points to the email address: communityteam@sourceforge.net Then again, all they are saying is that they are willing to listen, not necessarily that they will do anything about it...

I wasn't already subscribed to this mailing-list, so bear with me if I messed up the addresses or missed some replies which were not yet shown on the archive page. Sebastian Wahl

Wow you are right. The "full name" of this user is "SourceForge Editorial Staff".
They are just trying to capitalize on famous projects which left them basically!

I'm also noticing VLC on that list, which abandoned SF as well if memory serves me right.

Even if they would, I don't think that's enough. Even if they give us back the control of the account and say "oups sorry, our bad, that was a mistake", I vote for GIMP to first stop using Sourceforge at all (and too bad for broken links), do as much noise as possible for other projects to leave it and stop using it, and maybe more. As others propose, maybe even legal action through GNOME, though I have no idea if there is enough ground for this (though there is clear deception, as well as impersonating our project), since I am no lawyer. So I let others who know better and have such a power to decide.

But at the very least, we must have them stop distributing GIMP, leave the platform completely, and make as much noise about it as possible.

And are you now? I received it because I am in direct Cc, but others have not apparently (according to IRC). Your message is probably in moderation.

As I openned the profile for that page to check the list projects it said "GIMP for Windows: last upodated 4 minutes ago" - and the downlaod file thre nw feature today's date.

Maybe due to our contacts they have just changed the kind and nature of the malware
shipped with the installer.

I agree, if it hadn't been because they unbeknown to us had updated the installer, the links would be pointing to an old version anyway. I think it is better to have broken links and force people do a quick google search, than having users install old versions with fewer features and more bugs.

I did get a mail saying it was currently in moderation. I have subscribed, but I sent it from a different email address by accident.

SF claims abandonment of the project, and no response from the maintainer. Of course, they may not consider a request to C&D the delivery of the project as a "response"...

Over all that, let's not forget the wrapper installers. Which seem to have been removed silently now - and are not being mentioned at all in their blog post.

The phrasing they use in the post is «Mirrored projects[those that they take over] are sometimes used to deliver easy-to-decline third-party offers,».

What should happen is this: 1. take back control of the http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/ project page,
2. decommission the project (remove files, text, documents, etc).

It looks like SourceForge is too desperate to monetize since they have lost their edge to github.
There is no future to Sourceforge.

This makes it all the more important to update the Windows download page on GIMP.org to provide easy download. I will submit patches this week based on our previous discussions, now that I have all the text (thanks Michael). I think providing easy access through our GIMP.org site will hasten SF to its timely grave. Possibly without the need for litigation. On 28 May 2015 07:49, "Simos Xenitellis" wrote:
