LOL well the po is there (https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/po I assume?) but I have no idea about where to find the mo's

You probably are a Windows user then :) But no worries, binary translation file for Scottish Gaelic do get built, I've just checked, so you are good. The next stable release should have your translation.
