Enhancement request for .cur cursor files

Hi,

currently we have a bug report to add export for .cur files: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722472

To triage this I looked around in the plug-in registry and former postings on the mailinglists. I found that this request came up from time to time (often together with the wish for animated cursor files (.ani)). There was also a [solution] for .ani files at GIMPTalk, which could probably be used or GEGL-ified with some adaptions. In the past this request was [refused], because it was considered too special.

On the other hand - looking at our [product vision], we defined GIMP as 'a high-end application for producing icons, graphical elements of web pages and art for user interface elements'- If in vanilla GIMP is room for rather exotic formats like KISS Cel, XJT, FITS or DICOM, why not for those that meet our vision? The Linux build of GIMP 2.8 contains 'X11 mouse pointer (*.xmc)' which is one step into the right direction, but useless for Windows users.
Viewing it from this point of view I would say it could be part of GIMP.

How do we proceed with this request?

Kind regards,

Sven

Enhancement request for .cur cursor files

I don't know if closing the bugt report as "invalid" is a nice choice, if it is a valid feature being requested.

Are there more bug reports asking for the same thing? (/me shyes away of dealing with bugzilla) - so this would be a duplicate?

From your quotes above, it is clear that creating cursos files does fit in the product vision, and I do agree it GIMP should have support for it.

Enhancement request for .cur cursor files

Hi Joao,

Yes, I understand it could be misunderstood, but it wasn't my intention to prematurely turn it down. As I was told in IRC this is the usual way for unconfirmed enhancement requests. Think of the many times when we ask for more info (in Bugzilla or here) and never get a reply.
As told in the last sentence - if it gets accepted, we'll reopen it.

Are there more bug reports asking for the same thing? (/me shyes away of dealing with bugzilla) - so this would be a duplicate?

Bugzilla may sound like Godzilla but I never saw it crushing people ;-)

From your quotes above, it is clear that creating cursos files does

Nice to read another opinion ;-)

Kind regards,

Sven

No, it's no duplicate.

I've been through this. A lot of the time the closing post is a request to discuss it on the mailing list -before- filing it as a bug report.
